Our fictional assistant receives a thousand pages and claims to have everything in view. It immediately names the cover’s colour. An important qualification in the middle disappears from the summary. The binder complains about decorative reading.
Lost in the Middle, published in 2024, observed position effects in two information-retrieval tasks on the models tested. This does not measure every current AI. It highlights a distinction between accepting lots of text and actually using its contents.
With a real file, ask where a retained point appears and consult that passage. Compare the summary with the document, especially qualifications and exceptions. This reading suggestion does not make an automatically generated citation into evidence: the passage must exist and match the claim.
For comedy, imagine a librarian who can carry a pile of books without opening the middle one. The pile supplies the setting; confusing carrying with reading supplies the punchline. This fiction evaluates no model.
