Practical guides
Build spreadsheet formulas you can verify
Begin with the data model and expected result. A formula suggested by AI is a proposal to run and inspect, not proof that a spreadsheet is correct. Test on a copy before applying it to important records.

Method
1. Describe the columns
State column names, units, types and what blank values mean. Explain the requested calculation and the spreadsheet environment. Never use zero as a silent replacement for missing information.
2. Use a known example
Create a small fictional dataset with a manually calculated result. Ask for the formula and its assumptions. Check separators, ranges and date interpretation in your actual application.
3. Test boundaries
Try blanks, zero, negative values and an added row where relevant. Compare subtotals with the overall total. Inspect which cells are overwritten and retain a way to recover the original.
Example to adapt
For two fictional items, calculate quantity multiplied by unit price: 3 × 8 and 2 × 5. The expected total is 34. Show the formula, then explain how to flag a missing unit price instead of treating it as zero.
Checklist
Checks stay on this page; ticking a box does not automatically validate the result.
Deliverable
A checked formula, a small test dataset and documented assumptions.
Limitations
Spreadsheet syntax varies by application and locale. A correct sample does not prove every row or scenario is handled correctly.
