Confidence is not a “verify” button

When a sentence wears a tie, the evidence still has to turn up.

The magazine

Generative AI can produce a plausible but inaccurate statement. A confident tone does not establish its truth. A journal name, date or quotation may sound right without matching the document being sought.

Imagine an “International Institute of Connected Toast”. Its name is impeccable. Its bibliography less so: every reference points to the buffet. This invented scene distinguishes the appearance of seriousness from evidence that can be consulted.

When reading a real result, isolate the important claim. Find the stated document, then the passage that supports that exact claim. If the source is missing, leave the conclusion open. A machine can offer a lead; checking it takes more than another convincing sentence.
